What is a “mommy makeover,” and when should a mother have one?

SAN JOSE, CA – 4/11/2017 — Many women spend their younger years taking great care of their bodies. Understandably, many are proud of the way that they look. They’re healthy and fit. However, when a woman becomes a mother, many of the results of that work are at risk of being lost.

A woman’s body can be changed by the experiences of pregnancy and breastfeeding in many ways. The breasts often shrink dramatically, and may also sag. The abdominal muscles may separate, so that the tummy looks “pooched,” and fat may also be gained in this area. Many women also have a C-section scar, which may be too obvious after healing.

Unfortunately, many of the changes caused by motherhood can’t be fixed through exercise and healthy eating. The only way to reverse these changes is through cosmetic surgery.

For many women, a few different procedures are needed in order to restore the body to its former shape. Fortunately, women don’t need to go under the knife several separate times in order to get their bodies back. This is a good thing, because most moms are busy and it’s hard enough to schedule surgery once!

When a woman has a few different procedures to restore her body to its former glory, this is known as a “mommy makeover.” The exact procedures included depend on the woman’s needs and her desires for her body. According to Dr. A.M. Yenikomshian, a cosmetic surgeon with over thirty years of experience who practices at the Center for Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery in San Jose, a mommy makeover plan is “customized to meet your precise needs and goals as a mother and rejuvenate your figure.”

The breasts are a common area of concern after having kids, so at least one breast procedure is usually included as part of a mommy makeover. It’s common to have a breast lift, to repair sagging breasts. In many cases, a breast augmentation (placement of implants) is also included. Though many women expect that their breasts will sag after pregnancy, they are often caught off guard by how much the breasts can shrink. Implants can be placed at the same time as the breast lift is done, restoring the breasts to their youthful contour.

Many mothers also need a tummy tuck, because the connective tissue between the two sides of the abdominal muscles gets stretched during the pregnancy. When this happens, the belly will bulge outward, even if the mother loses all of the baby weight. Core workouts won’t help, because workouts only affect muscles, not connective tissue. A tummy tuck removes the excess connective tissue and brings the two halves of the muscle back together, so the woman can have a flat tummy again. In addition, pockets of excess fat are removed, along with excess loose skin.

Some women have stubborn pockets of fat that resist all efforts at removing them through exercise and diet. These can be removed through liposuction as part of a mommy makeover. (It’s important to recognize that liposuction is not a good method of removing large amounts of fat for overall weight loss, but rather a way to spot treat problem areas.) Revision of a C-section scar that is too wide, uneven, or otherwise not attractive may also be included if necessary.

The exact procedures for an individual mommy makeover will be determined by the woman’s own desires for her body. According to Dr. Yenikomshian, the exact procedures for each mommy makeover are decided at the consultation appointment between the patient and her cosmetic surgeon.

A woman should wait to have a mommy makeover until she’s finished having children. Though it may be tempting to get your body back as soon as possible, if you have your mommy makeover and then get pregnant again, you’ll just lose your new figure. If you’re planning to have another pregnancy, it’s best to wait on your mommy makeover. Then you’ll be able to enjoy the results of your procedures for years to come.
